The life long test...

I'm not a PC, or a Mac.... actually I'm both and then some.

We're getting bombarded by advertising these days, PC's are as much a part of our lives as mobile (cell) phones and cars... One company who will be named and shamed: Apple, sells it's PC's, music players, and mobiles (cell phones) as lifestyle choices; you will be this person if you buy our product, worse they say "if you don't buy our product you will be this person which you don't want to be...

Now hang on, arn't these just computers? sure we only spend more on cars and homes in our lives but we don't define ourselves by what we own and use surely?

Well yes, alas we do, 90% of the western world are media influences market driven zombies (that's not a statistic I made it up but depressingly it's probably right)

The problem with advertising, is it's like UK politics, IE mostly bollocks, with the inferior product selling itself better than the alternatives.

Apple started the ball rolling with their "I'm a Mac" ad's - proof if any was required that they acknowledge they do not sell a better product than those on the market, and instead sell the idea that by owning such things you join an elite 'cool' group of people. This is continued though much of their other product advertising, most of which has, in the UK, been pulled by OfCom because it is mostly bollocks.

Microsoft, for some stupid reasons, chose not to point out the hideously shallow motives behind the Apple campaign and instead leaped on the band waggon, producing only slightly less cringe worthy ads, at least attacking the stupid steriotyping.

And Linux, the OS of a billion faces, as usuall - dosn't advertise - it remains the reverlution in a basement thinking it can eventually take the world by storm...

Which leads me here, because ad's lie and most people buy one OS and live with it all their life, propogating the 'brand war' because they will never admit they where wrong.

For my work, and thus for my home life, I need to run all 3 OS's and I need to know all of them inside and out, each offers it's own advantages and it's own flaws.

The Big 3 is a real life blog looking at living with the 3 main OS the computer user of the day has, Specifically: Windows, Mac OSx and Linux.

were not talking marketing or hype here people we're talking one person who rocks all 3 and is going to give you the honest blow by blow account of what does what, and what isn't worth a mention.
